AI Digest: 8/2/09. The Problem with IQ Drugs.

BBC Channel 4: Cognitive Enhancement? “There are many drugs on the market which can boost mental performance. If these drugs can have such an effect, why are they different from stimulants like caffeine? Professor Barbara Sahakian is an expert in cognitive performance. She says the real problem with stimulants like modafinil is that their long term effects are not known.”

The Guardian: “Government Watchdog Considers Ban on IQ Drugs.” “Medical experts believe that a range of psychoactive drugs that includes those used to tackle the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and attention-deficit disorder in children, could fuel an already over-competitive society when used by the healthy.”

Wired: “Will Wright’s Robot-Powered Battle Plan for Stupid Fun.” Wright: “We had these weird robotic inventions, and we’d study the way they interacted with each other. We made short films as interstitials for NBC. One time, we had this robot waiting tables in a restaurant. We said it was a Stanford experiment, and asked people if they wanted to sit in the robot section. We learned a lot from that.”

Reuters India: “Drum Roll for the Forst Robotic Gamelan Orchestra.” “What do you get when you cross a cyborg with a set of ancient Indonesian musical instruments? GamelaTron, of course.”

AFP: “New Robots Help Humans Cope with Illness.” “Robots that can cook, dance to Michael Jackson songs or guide the blind are among the gadgets aimed at helping humans cope with illnesses on display in Spain at one of the world’s biggest annual gatherings of new technology enthusiasts.”
