AI Digest: 8/13/09. More People Using Pills For an Edge

Sun Journal: “Growing Numbers Use Pills For an Edge.” “More and more people are reaching for prescription drugs, despite the potential side effects, to get an edge on the competition. In a society bent on getting ahead and determined to cram more activities into schedules that are already bursting at the seams, the caution of experts and ethicists about the wisdom of relying on these drugs is often ignored.”

The Detroit News: “High Cost Puts Value of Surgical Robots in Doubt.” “Some experts tout surgical robots as the next must-have technology for hospitals performing complex procedures, offering better precision, less pain and blood loss, and faster patient recovery. But others in the medical field aren’t so sure, saying the benefits over traditional methods aren’t clear-cut and more research is needed. Complicating matters is the technology’s hefty cost. Each robot carries a price tag between $1.2 million and $1.5 million. And that’s prompted some doctors and industry analysts to decry it as a prime example of hospitals splurging on fancy new equipment without fully understanding whether the benefits outweigh the steep price.”

AFP: “US military embraces robot ‘revolution’.” “The use of robotics in the military has exploded in the past several years as technology has advanced while Washington faced a new kind of enemy that required patient, precise surveillance. In 2003, the US military had almost no robots in its arsenal but now has 7,000 unmanned aircraft and at least 10,000 ground vehicles.”

  1. Do these robots actually take part in combat, ie. in the place of soldiers, can they fool the enemy into thinking they are human? That would be great in sparing lives, sort of like canines used to sniff out bombs…But, I owuld never trust a robot to operate on me!
