Daily links on AI, IA and the place where social tech meets the two. Today: hiring spree at robot company; Koreans build massive robot; augmented reality apps roundup.

Boston Business Journal: “Heartland Robotics’ $12M funding fuels hiring spree.” “Heartland Robotics Inc., the manufacturing-focused robotics company founded by iRobot Corp. (Nasdaq: IRBT) co-founder Rodney Brooks, has taken in $12 million from three investors, and is aggressively hiring engineers, the Cambridge-based startup announced Monday.”

CNet: “Does your reality need augmenting? Try these apps.” “Reading the news about a University of Washington professor’s experimental electronic contact lens, I wondered if my dream of the ultimate personal technology has finally moved from over the horizon to in sight. Here’s what I want: to be able to walk into crowded cocktail party, and know exactly who I am looking at — each person’s name, last time we met, and other information pertinent for a pleasant social interaction. I want that information beamed into my field of vision, in text floating over their heads, like the health indicators over the bad guys in a computer game.”

Neoseeker: “Koreans building massive, massive giant robot.” “Maybe some South Koreans became jealous when hearing about Japan’s massive Gundam statue. Or maybe they just saw it and thought it was a good idea. But for what ever the reason, a much larger, massive-er, crazier giant robot statue is going to be built, in South Korea. Planned to be an epic-sized, 364 feet tall permanent tower, the new addition to Google Maps is going to be a star attraction at a new robot-themed theme park, being built, inventively called Robot Land.”

Despite the hundreds of military robots that show up in concept or as prototypes on company Web sites and corporate reports, humans still do the fighting on the ground and it’s likely to stay that way for a while. However, there’s a growing niche for ‘the dirty, the dull, and the dangerous’ jobs where robots could take over. In fact, it’s the law. The 2001 Senate defense authorization bill mandates that ‘one third of the operational ground combat vehicles of the armed forces will be unmanned by 2015′.”

Sadly, cranial USB ports are still pretty hard to install. The second most efficient possible display technology anyone’s devised projects images directly into the eye. The dream of a wearable virtual retinal display, or VRD, has been around for nearly two decades; it’s on the horizon, but it’s still going to be a while until it gets here.”

As Robyn Haines reports, with a robot as a teacher, one girl is gaining a new sense of stability.”

These microbots would work in swarms to collect data for a variety of applications, such as surveillance, micromanufacturing, and medicine. The researchers, from institutes in Sweden, Spain, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland, use a novel approach to allow robots to be built cheaply and in large quantities. Working on a limited budget, they built an entire robot on a single circuit board.”

Why is this so important, when Wikitude and other AR Android apps have been available for almost a year? Bringing augmented reality to the iPhone changes the cultural assumptions made about AR experiences as a class of offering. Endorsing AR experiences for iPhone users moves augmented reality from the geek realm of Android and Google, to the chic world of Apple. Culturally, the assumptions we make about the new products and services from Apple and Google are driven largely by the differences in way we perceive the two brands. Apple is chic, while Google is geek.”

Here’s a quick look at how the company’s augmented reality technology for the desktop works. Take the baseball cards. Users have to first log on to a URL and navigate to the 3-D section of the website, where they enter an interactive code found on their baseball card to activate the software. Then, they can hold the card under a webcam and Total Immersion’s software goes to work. It identifies a target on the baseball card, then overlays a virtual baseball player on the video onscreen. Users can then rotate the baseball player and make it perform a select few actions.”

CNet: “Robots kiss, but don’t go to second base (yet).” “With robots now doing everything from strutting the fashion catwalk to greeting hotel guests, it was only a matter of time before our humanoid friends started engaging in public displays of affection. Exhibit A: Thomas and Janet, two performance bots who made out publicly in front of hundreds during a December 2008 robotic production of “Phantom of the Opera” in Taiwan (racy robot lip-lock video is only making the rounds now). A team at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology spent three years developing and programming the smooching bots, which with the help of servo motors that pull at the face and mouth, can form six expressions–fewer than the highly expressive Einstein Robot, but sometimes sacrifices must be made for romance. The team used manual molding, non-contact 3D face scanning, and 3D face morphing to make the movements realistic.”

Wired (Bruce Sterling): “Augmented Reality: Augmented Traffic Views.” “Even by the rough-and-ready standards of AR viral-youtube product, this one’s pretty ragged. Love the eager offscreen babbling of the developer’s tot in the early part of this video. It’s like the Voice of the Industry.”

New York Times: “Could Auto Battery Advances Lead to Better Robots?“ “Perhaps more than any other factor, the life span of batteries has limited the infiltration of robotics into daily life. As computer processing and sensors have become cheaper and more powerful by the year, batteries, woefully inefficient and slow to recharge, have slogged behind, leaving engineers to dream of a day when they’ll have the juice to give life to their boldest creations.”

Daily links on AI, IA and the place where social tech meets the two. Today: Multitasking muddles the brain; five barriers to augmented reality; robots that mimic fish.

Wired: Multitasking Muddles Brains, Even When the Computer Is Off “Some people suspect that a multitasking lifestyle has changed how they think, leaving them easily distracted and unable to concentrate even when separated from computers and phones. Their uneasiness may be justified. In several benchmark tests of focus, college students who routinely juggle many flows of information, bouncing from e-mail to web text to video to chat to phone calls, fared significantly worse than their low-multitasking peers.”

ReadWriteWeb: “Augmented Reality: 5 Barriers to a Web That’s Everywhere.” “Let’s set aside for now questions about the desirability of Augmented Reality. Some people will be wary of its consequences for social interaction – even for spiritual practices already based on engaging with other layers of the world around us. Those questions deserve exploration, but the potential of AR is exciting enough that obstacles are worth discussing aside from objections. Augmented Reality is in some ways just another version of the web; a web applied, through novel interfaces, in reference to the physical world, instead of floating documents tied only to each other as the web is today.”

Physorg: “New Robots Mimic Fish’s Swimming.” “Mechanical engineers Kamal Youcef-Toumi and Pablo Valdivia Y Alvarado have designed the sleek robotic fish to more easily maneuver into areas where traditional underwater autonomous vehicles can’t go. Fleets of the new robots could be used to inspect submerged structures such as boats and oil and gas pipes; patrol ports, lakes and rivers; and help detect environmental pollutants.”

It already has its first patient, a 19 year old who could not remove himself from World of Warcraft.”
